Here are our top 5 tips to keep your horse in peak condition during the warmer months:
1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water
Hydration is key. Ensure your horse has constant access to fresh, clean water. In hot weather, a horse can drink up to 50 litres of water a day. Consider adding an electrolyte supplement to their water to encourage drinking and help replenish lost salts.
2. Create Shade
Horses need a shaded area to escape the sun’s intense rays. If your paddock lacks natural shade from trees, set up a shelter or use portable shade structures. Ensure the shelter is well-ventilated to allow for air circulation.
3. Adjust Riding Schedules
Plan your rides for the cooler parts of the day, either early in the morning or late in the evening. Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, typically between 11 am and 4 pm. Shorter, lighter rides can help prevent overheating.
4. Use Cooling Techniques
Hosing down your horse with cool water can effectively reduce their body temperature. Focus on areas with large blood vessels, such as the neck, chest, and between the hind legs. You can also use cooling sheets or fans in the stable to provide additional relief.
5. Monitor for Heat Stress
Regularly check your horse for signs of heat stress, which can include heavy sweating, rapid breathing, lethargy, or an elevated heart rate. If you suspect heat stress, move your horse to a shaded, cool area and offer water. Seek veterinary advice if symptoms persist.
Keeping your horse cool in the summer not only ensures their comfort but also promotes their overall health and wellbeing. Follow these tips, and you’ll both enjoy the summer months to the fullest.
Stay cool, stay safe, and happy riding!
