Grooming and hygiene plays a vital role in keeping your horse happy and healthy. Not only does it keep them looking fresh, it also promotes a healthy coat, reduces the risk of skin conditions and builds a bond between you both.
Here are our top five tips for grooming your horse.
Use the right brushes
Brushing keeps the coat looking sleek and shiny, stimulates blood circulation and helps distribute natural oils. To begin with, use a rubber curry comb or a grooming mitt in circular motions to help loosen any dirt, dead skin and hairs. You can then use a stiff-bristled brush to remove the debris. To give a show-stopping shine, finish up with a soft brush or grooming rag.
If you want to build up your brush kit, our in-shop team is on hand to help you find the brush you need. They can recommend the right brush for what you want to achieve. You can also visit our online shop where you will find a wide selection of brushes.
Don’t forget the mane and tail
To keep the mane and tail tidy, detangle the hair gently using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers. Minimise breakage and pulling by starting from the ends and working your way up. A detangler spray or a dab of conditioner can help you tackle big tangles and makes combing a lot easier.
We recommend the Absorbine Showring Shine & Detangler to make detangling a breeze. It also helps to repel dirt so their mane and tail will stay cleaner for longer!
Hoof care
Hoof care is vital for keeping your horse comfortable and preventing build-up of rocks and debris. Keep your eye out for any signs of cracks, thrush or other abnormalities. To keep the hooves healthy and ensure proper balance, be sure to schedule regular visits from a trusted farrier.
Bathe when necessary – but not too often
Bathing too often can strip the coat of nourishing natural oils, so only bathe them when they’re looking particularly dirty. Use a gentle horse shampoo and warm water to wash the body. Take extra care near sensitive areas such as the face and ears and be sure to rinse thoroughly.
We stock a huge range of shampoos and conditioners. Carr & Day & Martin has a wide range of shampoos to cater for any coat type.
Prevention is key
By protecting your horse from the elements, you can keep your horse cleaner for longer. Fly sheets, blankets, leg wraps and boots are great options to shield them from insects, dirt and mud.
