We’ve been enjoying a heatwave in the UK recently, which means we’ve had the chance to spend lots of quality time with our horses out in the sunshine! As a horse owner, your priority should always be the health and safety of your beloved companion. While horses are adaptable animals, they’re just as susceptible to the effects of extreme heat as humans. It’s our responsibility to provide them with the right care and conditions to keep them safe and comfortable during scorching summer days.
Here’s our top tips to prevent heat exhaustion in your horse this summer:
Shelter and ventilation
Shelter is crucial for your horse in hot weather, as it keeps them in the shade and away from direct sunlight especially during the hottest hours of the day. Be sure that your horse has a well-ventilated stable or run-in shed to rest in, so they can stay cool and comfortable.
Ample fresh water
Horses can lose significant amounts of fluid through sweating, so it’s even more important that they have a constant supply of fresh water. You could place multiple water sources in different areas around the stable to ensure all horses have adequate supply. Adding salt to their diet can also stimulate thirst and help replace essential electrolytes lost through sweating.
Adjust turnout schedules
During extreme heat, be sure to turn out your horse during the cooler hours of the day such as early morning or late evening when temperatures are more tolerable. This minimises their exposure to intense heat.
Fly control and insect protection
Hot weather often brings a surge in flies, mosquitoes and other bothersome insects. These pests can be extremely irritating and can transmit diseases. Fly masks, sheets and repellents are key to protect your horse from biting insects. The Carr & Day & Martin Flygard Extra Strength spray is a great option if you’re looking for a repellent spray that provides maximum protection against bites.
