As the temperature eventually starts to rise and the days get longer, it is a great time to start mixing up your horse care routine ready for summer. Here are some top tips for keeping your horse happy and healthy during the spring months:
Watch for laminitis
Spring grass is particularly rich and can increase the risk of laminitis, a painful condition that affects the feet. Make sure your horse’s diet is carefully managed to prevent overeating and keep a close eye on your horse’s behavior and hoof health.
Check your horse’s weight
After a long winter, it’s important to monitor your horse’s weight and adjust their diet as necessary. Make sure they’re getting enough exercise and consider consulting with a vet or equine nutritionist to ensure they’re getting the right balance of nutrients. We are also happy to advise in store and show you products that can help with diet and supplementation.
Groom regularly
As your horse starts to shed their winter coat, regular grooming with a high quality brush can help to remove dead hair and prevent skin conditions. Use a soft brush or curry comb to work through any knots and tangles, and be sure to pay attention to your horse’s feet and hooves as well of course.
Prepare for turnout
As the weather improves, your horse will likely want to spend more time outside. Make sure your turnout area is safe and secure, and consider investing in fly masks or sprays to protect against insects. We have a huge range of both, check out our online store for our ranges.
It’s a really good time to get a vet check-up
Post-winter is a good time to schedule a vet check-up to ensure your horse is in good health. This can include a dental exam, vaccinations, and other preventative care.
